My Name Is Joan • Margaret STAPOR Costa • Documentary Short (29:35)

The story of a woman who was born to an unwed mother in the St. Patrick Mother and Baby Home in Dublin, Ireland, in 1949, adopted in the US, and her journey to find her true identity. This film explores the issue of forced adoption: the illegal exporting of children by the Catholic Church to families in other countries for profit during the 1940s-70s, while the Irish government looked the other way.

Set inside their home, a beloved hatchback, this charming music-filled film follows a girl and her dad as they crisscross the country chasing their dreams. It's a story about the gifts we hand down, their power to carry love, and finding grace in the unlikeliest of places. Nominated for an Academy Award for best animated short film 2016, Pearl is directed by Patrick Osborne, Academy Award-winning director for best animated short film Feast in 2015, and produced and voiced by Albany residents.
