PROGRAM

Washed Ashore, Cameron Neilson (Documentary, 16:00) Follow an international team of marine biologists as they make discoveries about the role climate change plays in the mysterious die-off of gray whales.

The Fire Poppy, Sashwa Burrous (Documentary, 11:00) Fire is a natural and necessary part of our ecosystem, though it’s often feared as a threat. Firefighter Sasha Berleman recognizes and uses the alternate power of fire as a valuable tool to heal and protect the natural landscape.

Hunky Dory, Steven Vander Meer (Animation, 6:00) Scenes of animal life and human existence are juxtaposed to reveal the quirky and unexpected ways in which we are similar, moving and morphing to the banjo music of Béla Fleck.Trailer

Diablo’s Door, Joan N Hamilton (Documentary, 16:14) A 60-mile drive along State Route 130 offers a stunning introduction to the Diablo Range. One of California's least known and most biodiverse ranges, it has healthy populations of elk, eagles, kit foxes, condors, and mountain lions. Its vast open spaces could be vital to the survival of native plants and animals in a warming world—if we can find ways to keep them wild.

Planetwalker Dominic Gill (Documentary, 27:00) In 1971 John Francis witnessed an oil tanker collision in the San Francisco Bay. The sight of oiled birds on the shoreline caused him to give up motorized transport and rely solely on his own two feet. Months later, he took a vow of silence convinced that listening rather than adding fuel to any fire was the way ahead. He didn’t talk, but he kept on walking clear across the country and back again, connecting more deeply with the world and its people.

A Q&A with selected filmmakers follows this screening.
